Today Beckenham is in the London Borough of Bromley, but in the middle of the 19th century it was a relatively small village, some 9 miles from Charing Cross. It consisted of rural land and private parkland and records show that racing took place on Thursday 25th March 1847 with a programme consisting of 3 steeplechases. The meeting, held on the edge of the village, opened with the 4 mile Hunters Sweepstake which was won by The Curate. The final race of the day, the Beckenham Sweepstakes, saw Mr Washbourne triumph. There are no records of any further meetings being held in the village. |
